The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom is joining One Billion Rising. WILPF Secretary General Madeleine Rees explains why WILPF members around the world will strike, dance and rise on 14 February to demand an end to violence against women and girls.
Madeleine Rees is a lawyer who, prior to joining WILPF, worked from 1998 for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights as the gender expert and Head of Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She was portrayed in the film “The Whistleblower”, which raised attention on the 2001 scandal involving human trafficking for sexual exploitation in Bosnia.
1 in 3 women on the planet is raped or beaten in her lifetime.
That is ONE BILLION women.
