Brazilian community fights pressure to move

This film is for Eduardo Campos, Governor of Pernambuco state in Brazil. 53 families in Sirinhaém hope it helps him when he decides on their fate in the coming weeks.

The Governor is deciding whether or not to protect the land they live on. The 53 families have fled since Usina Trapiche, a local sugar cane factory arrived, saying that the company has made their home uninhabitable.

A proposal to make this area an ecological reserve has gained support amongst local people and could help protect their homes and livelihoods. We urge your Excellency to support this initiative. While the creation of the reserve will give this community a degree of security, much more needs to done. Amnesty International is also calling on Your Excellency to ensure that all allegations of threats and intimidation against this community are thoroughly and independently investigated and that those responsible are brought to justice.
